Looking Back on TNL

  • Why did TNL break up?
    • “We want to stress that our breakup was not due to internal strife: we parted on very good terms. It was just that some of us finally became too tired to truck on further. JaeHyun lost his passion for the game – similar to merryday, but more severely – due to the stale and unrewarding support meta. sCsC always wanted to try his hand at being ranged assassin, something he never got to do on TNL. Noblesse was burnt out and wanted to play on a casual team without the stress of competition. Meanwhile, the two of us who still wanted to shoot for the stars received an offer from MVP. Our separation was for the best.”
  • Was your composition in Game 6 of the 2015 GHL S1 Grand Finals premeditated?
    • “No. As we were losing, we just wanted to throw a wrench into how the series was going. We didn’t prepare Illidan nor a no support composition… it was purely improvised. But we thought our draft was decent and that it could work.”
  • In hindsight, how should you have dealt with Cloud 9’s Abathur + Murky?
    • “We probably should have picked more heroes with global mobility. As a fun aside, we actually tried to practice the Abathur + Murky composition last season as a pocket cheese strategy. It didn’t work at all in scrims, though; the meta had changed too much since Cloud 9 successfully used it against us. Shame.”
  • How did you deal with harsh community criticism?
    • “We received a lot of harsh words over the years, and a good chunk of them were uninformed and unwarranted. We had to learn to ignore any unreasonable hate. Thankfully we had thick enough skin so it was never a crippling issue.”

  • Most memorable moment on TNL?
    • “Beating MVP Black in the finals to win Superleague 2015. It was blissful.”
    • Crazymoving: “My best personal game was Match 3 of this season’s semifinal losers bracket final. We lost that game but I was happy with my play.”
    • Sniper: “My best personal game was when I pulled out Sylvanas to beat EDG and qualify for the semifinals of Blizzcon 2015.”
  • Any fun tidbits from your two years together?
    • Crazymoving: “sCsC passes gas way too often. Sniper can drink like a whale.”
    • Sniper: “No comment.”
  • What were your best heroes?
    • Crazymoving: “Most people will expect my answer to be Jaina, but personally I feel most comfortable on Kael’thas. Kael’thas is the only ranged assassin that can lead off a teamfight or catch out a straggler with hard crowd control.”
    • Sniper: “Zagara. Strong in lane, strong in 1v1s, long range… I didn’t realize how much I would miss her being a meta pick. I hope she returns soon.”
    • “Noblesse’s best hero was Muradin, obviously. He was always great on tanks with gapclosers/escapes.”
    • “JaeHyun was amazing on Malfurion and Lt. Morales. Staying near the back and keeping the team healthy was core to his playstyle; the two fit him perfectly.”
    • “sCsC was best on Zeratul. His strength in teamfights was performing cleanup duty, and he used Zeratul to great effect in that regard.”

  • What was TNL’s strategic legacy?
    • “We were at the forefront of the meta before the Cho’gall patch, especially in terms of gleaning experience advantages through map movement.”
  • Why could not TNL find a sponsor?
    • “We tried hard, often approaching potential sponsors and marketing ourselves, but from a certain point on all companies lost interest. Things might have been different if we had professional staff to handle the business side of our team, but the lack of money in the scene was severe and glaring.”
  • How would you like to be remembered?
    • “We were insanely jealous of all the other semifinalists at Blizzcon 2015 and then the 2016 HGC Spring Finals. Financial stability, organizational support, teamhouses… against such advantages, all we could do was just practice hard. Really really hard. We had nothing but gave it our all for as long as we stayed together, never doubting each other for an instant, always being a team in every sense of the word. Please remember us as the team that tried the longest and hardest under the harshest conditions.”

Thoughts on the 2016 HGC Summer Finals

  • How did you feel watching Tempest take down your archrivals?
    • Crazymoving: “It was a reflective moment. On TNL, I often felt I was doing all I could, at least from my role… watching dami and Lockdown made me realize I was very wrong. They always move forward in teamfights, even though they’re assassins, completely throwing off their opposition. They’re so confident that they will be able to dodge every spell thrown at their direction while landing all of their own – and they do. I now know how I should improve, how I can carry.”
  • Is Hongcono the best Muradin in the world now?
    • Crazymoving: “No. If Noblesse’s Muradin looked worse, that is on sCsC and me, not Noblesse. We failed to provide Noblesse the level of support that dami and Lockdown gave to Hongcono. Noblesse still is the best Muradin in the world.”

Gauging Team L5

  • Is Team L5 a professional team or an amateur team?
    • “Team L5 should be considered professional.”
  • Is Team L5 here to stay?
    • “Yes. Team L5 will most likely participate in Superleague 2016 S3 as well.”
  • Are you scared to play against Team L5?
    • “Yes; Noblesse is the smartest player to have ever played this game. He was the main shotcaller for TNL – his calls were insanely detailed and often prophetic. We would not be too surprised if Team L5 ended up being a stronger team than ours. That being said, we also really want to play against Team L5 and win.”
  • How will Team L5 stack up against MVP Black and Tempest?
    • “Team L5 definitely have enough individual talent to challenge the top two. Whether they actually will is up to them.”

First Impressions of MVP Miracle

  • First impressions of your new teammates?
    • “We haven’t played together all that much yet, but our first few games together have felt quite good. We’ve played against them for a long time and have long respected their skill.”
  • How is living in a teamhouse?
    • “Necessary. Any serious team needs a proper teamhouse. After living a few days at MVP’s quarters, we realized TNL would have been the best team in the world if only we had access to this kind of support.”
  • Will MVP Miracle be able to compete with MVP Black and Tempest?
    • “Yes. All we need is time to gel as a team.”
  • Expectations we should have for MVP Miracle this season?
    • “We’re going to take revenge on both MVP Black and Tempest. Watch out.”

Thoughts on the Game

  • Do you enjoy today’s more teamfight-centric meta?
    • “We think it’s better for the spectators because the game is always on the line and thus offers more excitement. As players, though, it’s very stressful to know that even a huge lead can be entirely lost with one fatal teamfight.”
  • Any frustrations with the state of the game?
    • Crazymoving: “I really hate when developers remove depth from the game. The most glaring example was disabling self Cleanse. One of the most impactful and exciting plays you could make as a support was to soak critical crowd control for your team by using Cleanse on yourself and diving into spells. Why did Blizzard deliberately hold back supports from making flashy game-changing plays? A similar mistake was removing the few milliseconds of Unstoppable on mobility spells. You could perfectly time your mobility spell to negate crowd control, which allowed for you to show off mechanical prowess and have more power to influence the result of a teamfight. The game needs these mechanics back.”

Thoughts on the Scene

  • Does professional Heroes of the Storm have a future in Korea?
    • “We hope it does, but things are very grim.”

Fun/Fan Questions

  • When will you start streaming?
    • “Our Azubu contracts will probably start on July. Keep an eye out.”
  • Do you still play SC2? Did your experience as a SC2 pro help you in HotS?
    • “No, SC2 is boring as hell. Our SC2 experience did help in terms of maintaining a professional mindset, though. Small things such as always watching the map and watching out for cloaked shimmers were transferable as well.”
  • Is Crazymoving’s emotional streak an asset or a liability?
    • Crazymoving: “I don’t think it’s ever been a liability. I think pro players should always be passionate about winning.”
    • Sniper: “I think it’s an asset.”
  • Do Crazymoving’s parents still want him to quit pro gaming?
    • Crazymoving: “That was when I was playing SC2 and not trying very hard. To be honest I wasn’t very professional when I was a SC2 pro. After switching to HotS and trying my hardest from then on, my parents became very supportive.”
  • Do you two have girlfriends?
    • “No.”
  • How can we interact with you directly?
    • Crazymoving: “Reach me on Facebook!”
    • Sniper: “I don’t use SNS, so reach me through Crazymoving :)”

The Best Players in the World

  • Korean All-Stars
    • Crazymoving: “I read your interview with Mighty and was flabbergasted to see that Head Coach Moon had picked Kong as the flex player. He loves his players way too much. Has Kong ever reached a finals anywhere? No! After reading that we really wanted to pick our own all-stars.”
    • Main Tank: MVP Black Sign
      • “Unquestionable.”
    • Melee Warrior/Assassin: Tempest dami
      • “Unquestionable.”
    • Ranged Assassin: Tempest Lockdown
      • Crazymoving: “Lockdown’s better than me on everything else, but me on Jaina deserves an honorable mention :)”
    • Flex: MVP Black KyoCha / Tempest duckdeok / MVP Miracle Sniper
      • “No one’s really on another level as a flex player, the three are roughly equal in skill.”
      • Crazymoving: “Two things, though: ex-Mighty Kong is below these three, and Sniper on Zagara is above the two others on anything specific.”
    • Support: ex-TNL JaeHyun / MVP Black merryday / Tempest Hide
      • “JaeHyun was the best by far on Malfurion and Lt. Morales. merryday has the best Rehgar. Hide has the best Kharazim and Brightwing. Uther… well, all three of them are equally good at Uther.”
  • World All-Stars
    • Main Tank: MVP Black Sign
      • “Unquestionable.”
    • Melee Warrior/Assassin: Tempest dami / Team L5 sCsC
      • “sCsC was ridden with nerve issues for all of his career. In scrims, he was always the best player in the world, capable of outplaying Rich on a daily basis. But he never managed to show the extent of his skills on stage.”
    • Ranged Assassin: eStar XingC
      • “XingC constantly hard carries an otherwise mediocre team. We would not hesitate to say that he is a better ranged assassin than Lockdown.”
    • Flex: ex-Cloud 9 k1pro
      • “We haven’t kept up with the North American scene this season, so we are unaware of his current level of skill, but at least up until the Spring Global Championships, k1pro was the best flex player in the world, or at least had the potential to be. He was the hard carry of Cloud 9 and his sense for the game was very impressive.”
    • Support: Dignitas Bakery
      • “This is more of an honorable mention; we still think Bakery is the best at using Divine Palm.”
